Ellabelle Davis was a soprano opera singer. Prior to her career as a concert singer, she worked as a dressmaker. Davis began her musical career at The Town Hall in 1942. She was the first African American to play the lead role of Aida during her 1946 performance at the Opera Nacional in Mexico. She resumed her role as Aida at La Scala in 1949 and recorded for Decca in February 1950. Posthumously, an opera based on Davis was performed in 2009 and she was inducted into the New Rochelle Walk of Fame in 2011. This collection consists of performance programs, news clippings, and personal papers pertaining to Ellabelle Davis's career as an opera singer. African-American impresario and director of the Manhattan Concert Bureau, previously called the Manhattan Artist Bureau, a management firm for Black performers in the 1930s and 1940s. Correspondence, financial records, miscellaneous writings and printed matter documenting Charles Marshall's professional activities as director of the Manhattan Concert Bureau from 1937 to 1940, and the career and concert appearances of Black entertainers he represented or sought to represent: Heppie Ross, pianist and lecturer; Harry T. Burleigh, composer, and Massie Patterson, Ruby Elzy, Hazel Harrison and Aubrey Pankey, singers. Also included are letters from Marshall to colleges and universities regarding possible concert engagements, and a letter with attachments from Black historian and author Alexander Gumby. less

Weekly 30-minute NBC radio broadcasts, featuring classical and light classical music, which began on Apr. 29, 1940 and continued until 1958. In September, 1959, the Bell Telephone Hour made its television debut as a monthly musical special. It remained a regular television program until April 26, 1968. Library's holdings incomplete. Broadcasts chiefly originated from New York City, sponsored by the Bell Telephone Company (American Telephone and Telegraph). Each 30-minute program generally features a guest singer or instrumentalist, with the Bell Telephone Hour Orchestra, conducted by Donald Voorhees, and the Bell Telephone Hour Chorus. Frequent guest artists include Marian Anderson, Robert Casadesus, Nelson Eddy, Josef Hofmann, Fritz Kreisler, Oscar Levant, James Melton, Grace Moore, Ezio Pinza, Lily Pons, Bidú Sayão, Gladys Swarthout, John Charles Thomas, Helen Traubel, and Eileen Farrell. The Leo Reisman collection contains primarily private acetate disc recordings of Reisman's radio performances of the 1930's, as well as Reisman's personal collection of commercial 78 rpm discs. Included among the noncommercial recordings are extensive holdings of his Philip Morris Show and Schaefer's nine o'clock revue appearances. Less complete holdings for Lucky Strike's your hit parade are also included. The commercial disc collection is comprised mostly of Reisman's commercially released recordings, as well as a small number of other artists' recordings. All commercial discs have been assimilated into the general holdings of the archive, and can be located in the NYPL catalog. less
